 View of the Thunder Basin Coal Companys strip mining operation at the Black Th under mine. By law, the coal company must do its best to return this area to i ts natural state after the coal has been removed. After mining operations are complete, the company landscapes the land to prevent acid mine drainage and plants it with ap proximately 19 different species in an attempt to reintroduce the prarie to an area that had been heavily mined. According to the NGS book entitled A Heartla nd of a Continent, Wyomings Black Thunder Operation, the largest coal mine in the U.S ., annually strips 30 million tons of raw energy from an immense bed near Wrigh t. Low price and low sulfur content help make this bonanza competitive with eas tern mines. This coal deposit was formed 300 million years ago during the Paleozoic, when t his area was a swamp. |
